When women over 40 are suffering from infertility the cause is almost always attributed to menopause.  However for women in their 20’s and 30’s that are having trouble conceiving there can be a number of other causes.  While you can’t completely rule out menopause it is highly unlikely as the cause of your infertility problems.  Let’s look at infertility and the causes.

Premature menopause

You will find the symptoms of premature menopause to be the same as naturally occurring menopause.  You will still have the mood swings, hot flashes and vaginal dryness.  If you suffer from premature menopause, you will not be able to conceive using your own eggs.  Many women who do get pregnant with this condition have gone through IVF and used donor eggs.  You can have a normal pregnancy through IVF but you will have to work with a fertility specialist.

Endometriosis causes a tremendous amount of pain during your menstrual cycle and this condition can also lead to infertility.  Endometriosis is often undiagnosed as women believe the pain they experience during their cycle is perfectly normal.  If the condition is left untreated it can result in scar tissue to form outside of your uterus.  This scar tissue causes even more painful periods and infertility.  You need to see a doctor as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage from happening.  Much of the scar tissue and damage that you have from endometriosis can be surgically corrected.


PCOS of polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormone disorder that prevents your ovaries from releasing eggs.  PCOS can be easily treated with medication, lifestyle changes can be just as effective in treating PCOS too.  Women who are overweight and live unhealthy lifestyles have a higher risk of developing PCOS.  Most doctors will prefer changes to your exercise regimen and diet before prescribing medication. Being overweight and pregnant comes with its own health risks. Both mother and child are at risk when a very overweight woman conceives.

If you aren’t sure of the cause of your infertility then it is time to speak with your doctor and get a referral to a specialist or fertility clinic.  In may not be a problem with your ovaries it may be caused by a low sperm count in your partner.  IVF is one of many possible solutions to your infertility issues along with various medications.  The situation is far from hopeless.
