From the desk of...
Nisha Shah Tanwar, Executive Director
I am pleased to welcome you to the inaugural issue of Women Helping Women's updated newsletter, The WHW Gazette. Both the Board of Directors and I wanted to reach out to our supporters to let you know the many ways in which WHW continues to thrive.
In this issue we introduce you to Kathy Stevko, our new Program Director. Her experience working as a Senior Habilitation Counselor with University Behavioral Healthcare will bring a fresh perspective to our roster of programs. The outreach provided by WHW's programs is vital to the women, teens and girls we serve, so we are excited to have Kathy on board.
Anne Safran Dalin, a WHW Board Member, deserves kudos for her recent event, "Comedy Central finds...Something to Laugh About." Below you will read about this fun evening, which raised much-needed funds while providing much-needed laughs.
Finally, I am pleased to announce that WHW's programs have moved to a beautiful new location, which is listed to the left, while our business offices remain at 224 Main Street, Metuchen. We are excited by the fresh start and welcome you to stop by any time!
Big Laughs for a Great Cause
On March 16, 2010, WHW
presented
Comedy Central
finds…Something to Laugh
About! a
benefit with an A-list
comedy lineup at the
Stress Factory.
“The group of women
performing at the
benefit were fantastic
and extremely funny,”
said Anne Safran Dalin,
event organizer and WHW
Board Member.
“Thanks to the generous
support of Comedy
Central and CareOne,
people coming to the
event did a good deed
while having a great
time."
Three very funny women
shared the stage: Ophira
Eisenberg, one of New
York Magazine's Top 10
Comics; Amy Schumer, who
debuted on NBC's Last
Comic Standing; and
LeighAnn Lord, who
received the NYC Black
Comedy Award for “The
Most Thought Provoking
Black Female Comic.”
"It was such an honor to
perform at the Women
Helping Women benefit --
it was one of the best
groups I've had a
pleasure to perform to -
smart and fun," said
Eisenberg. "They're my
people."

And They're Off!
On
May 7, 2010 Women Helping
Women hosted its 14th
annual Night at
the Races
fundraiser at the famed
Pegasus restaurant at the
Meadowlands in East
Rutherford, New Jersey.
The excitement of the races
will be accompanied by a
bountiful buffet and
terrific raffle prizes.
As Women Helping Women’s
major fundraiser for the
year, we raise critical
dollars that enable our
35-year-old agency to
provide affordable therapy
and support services for
women, teens and girls
throughout Central Jersey.
With your help, Women
Helping Women can continue
to be a refuge for those in
need.
A Night at the Races will be
held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.,
with a 7 p.m. post
time. For more
information about individual
tickets or corporate
sponsorship, please call
(732) 549-6000.
Spotlight On
Kathy Stevko, Program
Director
From
analyst to therapist, Women
Helping Women’s new program
director traded in big business
for a career working with people
in need. Kathy Stevko, who
joined WHW earlier this month,
spent 12 years as a programmer
and analyst for Prudential and
then a project manager for
Merrill Lynch. However,
the events of September 11, 2001
opened her eyes to an unexplored
interest.
“I like to help people, and I
wanted to make a difference in
people’s lives,” Kathy
said.
“I had been dabbling with the
idea of being a therapist.
Finally, I decided, ‘It’s
time.’”
After earning a Master of Arts
in Social Work from Monmouth
University, Kathy worked with
the severely and persistently
mentally ill. Her
experience as a case manager, a
primary therapist and a senior
habilitation counselor prepared
her for the position at WHW.
As Program Director, Kathy plans
to expand the number of therapy
and support groups. She
also wants to expand the Strong
Girls program to more schools in
great need.
Kathy is newly married and has a
10 year-old daughter, Kyra.
Her enthusiasm is evident when
she talks about her passion for
helping people.
“This is what I’ve always wanted
to do,” she explained. “If I
were to win the lottery, this is
the job I would do for free.”
